3 Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing the External Colour of a New Home

Posted on

Many people go to great lengths to build their own homes instead of buying an existing home. However, such people may put little thought into choosing the exterior colour of the home. The result is that many new-home owners make several mistakes that mar the beauty of that newly built home. This article discusses some mistakes that you should avoid making as you choose the colour of the exterior of your new home.

Mistake 1: Ignoring the Landscaping

Landscaping should play a role in guiding you as you choose the colour to paint the exterior elements of your home. This is because the colour theme should be uniform for the landscaping and the external aspects of your home, such as the walls. For instance, it may not be advisable for you to paint your external walls green if your new home was built in an area with many trees. This is because the shade from the trees may make the home look darker (and less attractive). Instead, pick a colour (such as cream) that will brighten the home. You should also consider the different colours of the flowering plants so that you pick a paint colour that will not clash with the seasonal colour changes in your landscaping.

Mistake 2: Ignoring Neighbouring Homes

Different homes within a neighbourhood accentuate or detract from one another. That is why you should pay close attention to the external paint of the neighbouring homes so that you limit the contrast, if any. It may be better for you to pick a colour that will blend into the general trend/theme of the neighbourhood. For instance, pick a light colour like cream if neighbouring houses have light-coloured external paint.

Mistake 3: Accentuating Unattractive Elements

Avoid choosing a colour that draws attention to the unattractive aspects of your newly built home. For instance, do not paint unevenly placed windows using a bright colour because that bright colour will make the window-placement defect more pronounced. Similarly, avoid painting the external AC system components using a bright colour like purple because such a colour can make the exterior of your home less attractive.

You have the liberty to choose different ways to finish your newly built home. As you exercise that liberty, put the professional advice of your new homes builder into consideration before you make any decisions that will determine how attractive your home will be. Avoid making the mistakes above, and you will stand a better chance of having an attractive exterior at your new home.
